Three rum brands, each with its own history and all produced in the Diamond Distillery in Guyana, are combined to create Wood’s. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Guyana was a Dutch colony with up to 380 sugar farms, the majority of which had their own rum distillery.
British forces occupied and united Guyana in 1814, and the country formally became British Guiana in 1831.
The sugar plantations were consolidated when the British abolished slavery in 1833 as labour costs increased and the price of sugar decreased.
Only the Diamond Distillery, which still employs two of the original wooden pot stills and several of the ancient rum marques, was left by the turn of the 20th century.
